Broadcast PR: How can TV and radio help your business grow?

Arlen Outside

The PR industry certainly keeps you on your toes, with seemingly endless new platforms and technologies to stay on top of. However, the importance of broadcast PR remains unchanged.

Here, Account Manager and former broadcast journalist, Arlen James, explains why brands should aim for the airwaves.

Don’t switch off on broadcast

When it comes to TV and radio, the numbers speak volumes.

Figures from 2021 show 27.2 million households in the UK own a TV – a number which has undoubtedly risen since. Meanwhile, RAJAR figures show 49.4 million over 15s tuned into their favourite radio stations each week in the first quarter of 2023.

So, even if I left it there, you could see why broadcast media remains so important.

Numbers aside, broadcast PR is a powerful tool for telling your brand’s story effectively. While not impossible with other media, TV and radio allow for emotion to be displayed easier than its written counterparts.

That can be crucial in ensuring your story resonates with your audience – and it is often more engaging.

Effective PR also comes down to trust. It’s therefore worth noting that radio and TV are the two most trusted mediums in Europe. From national TV news programmes to bulletins on local radio, they can do wonders for your brand.

Unlike print or digital PR, it’s common for people to leave their TV or radio on in the background. And that’s not just at home – you’ve probably heard the radio in shops or saw the news on TV in the pub!  So, your story could be reaching more people than you expect.

Numbers continue to grow

One medium that continues to grow in popularity is podcasts.

With more than 21 million listeners in the UK alone, their popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing any time soon. And it’s worth approaching them.

Podcasts cover a wide range of topics and are often keen for guests to take part in discussion. Adding them to your broadcast PR strategy can help make sure you reach the people traditional radio doesn’t.

Is broadcast PR right for me?

It is important to know whether your story is suitable for broadcast PR and, if not, how you can change that.
