How beneficial can PR support be to charities?

PR support is a great way to reach new people and build your organisation – but it’s not just for the big companies and money-makers.

Here, PR Account Manager Arlen James discusses why charities should weave PR into their plans.

For any organisation, a thorough PR plan can do wonders in helping meet and exceed targets – from attracting clients and increasing sales to recruiting talent and more.

And charities have just as much to benefit from as businesses.

Finding vital funds

The services charities across the UK deliver are vital, but relying on donations and sponsorships means funds are a constant challenge. Organisations hold fundraisers throughout the year, but their success depends on how many people are aware of them.

An experienced PR team can help ensure fundraisers receive the publicity they need through press and social media engagement. That can work wonders in reaching a wider audience and increasing the chance of donations.

Charities always have a story tell – from case studies about the people they support to events they hold. Ensuring those stories are told is essential to build awareness of services, both to encourage donations and to also reach people who might need support.

Whether its creating press releases, arranging interviews with journalists or managing social media, charities have a lot to gain from PR. And Prominent have numerous success stories in the third sector.

Prominent PR’s support for charities and social enterprises

As well as working with a variety of companies spanning different sectors, Prominent proudly supports some fantastic charities.

One of those is local mental health charity Suffolk Mind. The organisation has always recognised the importance of PR within their strategy, having sought our support in February 2022 following the departure of their in-house PR and marketing coordinator.

From identifying news stories and drafting press releases to arranging interviews, we have helped gain Suffolk Mind hundreds of media clippings across local and national print and broadcast media. Each story has raised awareness of mental health, as well as Suffolk Mind’s services and opportunities to support them.

As well as our work with Suffolk Mind, we also work with the incredible social enterprise Hey Girls. On a mission to eradicate period poverty, our PR offering for Hey Girls has helped highlight the extent of the problem across the UK.

Through media relations and press releases, we have secured a significant amount of press coverage for Hey Girls. That has proved vital in encouraging more businesses to purchase their products, allowing them to donate more tampons, pads and reusables and surpass their 30 million donation milestone. Our work also saw us both scoop an award for the best Corporate and Business Communications Campaign at the ATC CIPR PRide Awards.

We have also added another third sector string to our bow after joining forces with veteran-led social enterprise Combat2Coffee. We’ve helped the incredible organisation gain extensive press coverage in our first two months together, including joint campaigns with Ipswich Town Football Club and Suffolk Mind.Whether the aim is to increase funds, reach more people or ensure important topics are discussed, PR is an essential tool to deliver results for organisations.
